Flood reduction efforts: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans a community open house on August 5

Published Monday, July 13, 2026

Midland, Michigan – The community is invited to an open house with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Detroit District on Wednesday, August 5. This open house is designed to share information about the ongoing General Investigation (GI) study and the new Tentatively Selected Plan (TSP) and to get the public’s input on the TSP and legacy flooding.

The open house will run from 3 to 7 p.m., with the flexible format allowing community members to come and go as their schedules allow. There will be a short video running that gives an overview of the process and the TSP, then participants can visit various “information stations” to learn more and talk with the USACE experts and engineers. There also will be an area for community members to comment on the record if desired. Representatives from the study’s local partners – the County of Midland, City of Midland, and the Midland Business Alliance (MBA) Advisory Committee on Infrastructure – will also be available to share information about local flood reduction efforts and answer questions at the open house.

“This upcoming public meeting is a critical milestone that allows the Corps of Engineers and our local non-Federal sponsor team to gather feedback on the Draft Feasibility Report and Tentatively Selected Plan to reduce flood risk across Midland. Hosting this open house is an essential step in our planning process, bringing the voices of residents and community partners together to directly shape the path forward,” said Susan Rusinowski, project manager for the study, USACE Detroit District.

The August 5th open house will be held on the Northwood University campus, 4000 Whiting Drive, Midland, in the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center, near the NADA Hotel and Conference Center and the intersection of Naegele Drive and Whiting Drive. There is free parking adjacent to the building. No prior registration is needed and the community is welcome to this free event.

“We thank Northwood University for providing the meeting space for this informational and interactive community event,” said Tony Stamas, MBA president and CEO.

The GI study is the second USACE study to look at the Tittabawassee River Watershed and its flooding. Kicked off in November 2024, the GI study is focused on managing flood risks to life and safety, reducing damages to property, and determining the cost benefit and feasibility of potential projects.
