Regional Collaboration for Lasting Change

In response to Michigan’s first Statewide Housing Plan, launched in 2022, fifteen Regional Housing Partnerships were formed to advance local implementation. Region G’s partnership brings together stakeholders to align strategies, set regional priorities, and support attainable housing.

Region G, our defined area for the housing partnership, includes Arenac, Bay, Clare, Gladwin, Gratiot, Isabella, Midland, and Saginaw Counties. The Administrative lead for this effort is now Housing Forward.

Midland Housing Insights

When housing options are limited, people may begin looking elsewhere. This could impact both the 9,500+ residents commuting out of Midland for work and the nearly 19,000 commuting in. Low availability of for-sale homes may also affect pricing trends.

Midland Housing Insights

The Regional Housing Needs Assessment for East Central Michigan (Region G) highlights current and projected housing challenges across eight counties, including Midland. The study shows rising demand for both rental and for-sale housing, with the greatest gaps in affordable rentals for lower-income households and mid-priced homes for working families. Regionally, thousands of new units will be needed over the next five years, while Midland faces unique pressures tied to affordability, aging housing stock, and limited availability. Read both the whole study and the Midland-specific studies below.

Concept & Execution

Housing Forward is gathering the right data to understand the challenges, sharing the stories of businesses impacted by the shortage of workforce housing, advocating for housing legislation that aligns with our guardrails, providing technical assistance to housing development projects and implementing housing tools and resources.

We are doing this through a community-based initiative to holistically approach and implement solutions to the development and rehabilitation of attainable housing throughout Midland County.
