Corps of Engineers to update community September 24 in Midland

Published Friday, August 22, 2025

Midland, Michigan – On Wednesday, September 24, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Detroit District will update the community on its flood risk management study of the Tittabawassee River Watershed in Midland County. The free event is open to the public and will take place on Northwood University’s campus, 4000 Whiting Drive, in the lecture hall of the Griswold Communications Center. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the program starts at 5:30 p.m. Parking is available nearby.

In addition to a presentation by the Corps of Engineers, the local partners – the County of Midland, City of Midland and Midland Business Alliance (MBA) Advisory Committee on Infrastructure – also will provide flood reduction and resiliency updates. There will be time for Q&A from the audience.

“We thank Northwood University for offering to host this community event,” said Tony Stamas, MBA president and CEO. “If people are not able to make it that night, they shouldn’t worry. We are videotaping the event, and the recording will be available online and on MCTV after the event.” Watch for information about the event and the recording at MBAmi.org/FloodStudy.

This is the second Corps of Engineers study to look at the Tittabawassee River Watershed and its flooding. This multi-year General Investigation (GI) study is focused on managing flood risks to life and safety, reducing damages to property, and determining the cost benefit and feasibility of potential projects.

In November 2024, the GI study kicked off with a three-day planning meeting that included the Corps of Engineers, federal and state agencies, the local partners and community stakeholders. Since then, the local partners collected and shared historical flood damage data with the Corps of Engineers. The Detroit District held a community open house in Midland in March to gather input from citizens. The Corps of Engineers and the local partners continue to meet regularly as the study progresses.
