Crews to Inspect Midland Area Waterways

Published Wednesday, October 25, 2023

The County of Midland, the City of Midland, and the Midland Business Alliance (MBA) Advisory Committee on Infrastructure are working on ways to reduce the frequency and severity of flooding. When debris, sediment, fallen trees and branches are in the local waterways, they can potentially obstruct good flows and impact local flooding. To evaluate the current accumulation of debris and erosion in and around the Midland area waterways, a project will begin on Monday, October 30, to identify and document potential problem areas.

Crews from the Spicer Group will be conducting an engineering field review and collecting the necessary data, which will be used to determine priority areas for future cleanup work. Area residents should be aware that crews will be seen regularly around the rivers, drains and culverts in the days ahead. The waterways include: the Tittabawassee River, Sturgeon Creek, Snake Creek, State Drain and other local drains. Letters are also being sent to landowners along the waterways to help inform them.

This field review project is expected to take approximately two weeks, depending on the weather. The City of Midland Water Reclamation Department can be contacted with questions at 989.837.3500 or jdriscoll@midland-mi.org.

The MBA Advisory Committee on Infrastructure is also working with the County of Midland and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on studies and flood reduction efforts. Read more about this ongoing work here.
